DIY Lavender Sleep Spray: It Is Worth a Try
5:06 AMDo you think your little ones or YOU need a little help in order to fall asleep? You probably just need some fresh lavender scent on the sheets during bedtime. This DIY lavender sleep spray might just send your kinds and yourself to dreamland in no time.
There are three reasons why I decided to make my own sleep spray. First of all, I needed an inexpensive, safe, naturally calming way to sleep (and maybe get some sweet dreams...) Second, in case it does not magically send me to dreamland at least my pillows would smell delightful through the night. Lastly, it makes a great gift.
After some research I found this recipe that calls for only 3 ingredients: distilled water, lavender essential oil and rubbing alcohol. Other things you will need are a small spray bottle (it should be ember or cobalt blue and I will explain why) and measuring cups or spoons, but this is optional.
I guess I need not explain why we need distilled water for this DIY lavender sleep spray recipe. On the other hand, the lavender essential oil here is very important. Lavender EO is popular for its relaxing effects to the mind and body. It is also widely known to aid sleep. Other uses of this essential oil is: treatment for insect bites as it reduces itching and swelling and it is also used on minor burns.
Lavender EO also has cleansing properties, which is why people use them for cuts and treatment of eczema. It is also works wonders when you are feeling nauseous.
Moving, rubbing alcohol is needed for its disinfecting properties. Some recipes call for vodka and others witch hazel for the same purpose. Rubbing alcohol, I believe, is the most accessible ingredient for most of us.
Okay, this is the part where I explain why you need dark colored bottles. The therapeutic and aromatic properties of essential oils deteriorate easily when exposed to UV light or sunlight. And even if they are in dark colored bottles it is important to store both your bottle of essential oil and your sleep spray in a dark, cool place.
Here are the amounts you need for each ingredient (for a 4 oz spray bottle):
2 teaspoons of rubbing alcohol
10 drops of lavender essential oil
3 ounces of distilled water
All you have to do is pour them all in your spray bottle. Shake well. You can add a few drops more of the essential oil if you want a stronger scent but 10 drops should be enough. Put the spray nozzle back and cover. Spray on your pillow before bed time. So far, it works for me and the kids, not to mention the rooms smells delightful with every spray. The scent can last until morning when I wake up.
Then tie a ribbon or add a charm around the neck of a bottle and you can give the DIY lavender sleep spray as a gift.
