The Best Sunscreen: How to Choose
7:50 PMNever underestimate the power of sunscreen especially if it’s the right one for the situation and the right one for your skin type
Nowadays, there are so many types, brands and forms: from lotions, sprays to gels and what not. Due to this, it is no longer easy to choose a sunscreen from a department store. In other terms, finding the right sunscreen has become a daunting task.
Thus, if your vacation is still weeks away then you have
just enough time to research and find the best sunscreen that is right for
you. We want to make things easier so
here are some useful things you need to know before heading to the store to buy
that skin-saving potion.
Why you need the Best sunscreen?
Before anything else, you need to know why you need it in
the first place. Sure, it may only be
just two or three days under the sun in in the shores of Boracay, for example.
But, what you may not know is that besides that sunkist glow you are expecting
to get, the sun can cause a great damage to unprotected skin.
Scientifically speaking, your skin needs protection from the
sun’s UVB or Ultraviolet B rays, which causes skin cancer and sunburns. That
number with a plus plus sign on the label on a certain brand of sunscreen
product refers to the lotion’s sun protection factor (SPF). So does this mean
that a product with a high SPF, is automatically the best one because it sounds
like it has the highest ability to protect you from UVB?
There is actually more to look for besides just the SPF. The
sunscreen should also protect your from UVA or the Ultraviolet A rays because
it also increases your skin cancer risk.
If it does not, it is the culprit behind premature aging.
So what should you look for in a sunscreen? There are three
very important things that a sunscreen should have. Read on.
Broad Spectrum
It should be the kind that is broad-spectrum or
multi-spectrum, which means that it protects you from both UVA and UVB.
Furthermore, when to protection from UVB, particularly sunburn, you need the
one that has SPF 15 or higher. The higher the number, the longer you can stay
under the sun before you burn. As for UVA, there is no specific rating for this
one so what you need to do is look for any of the following ecamsule, stabilized
avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
Water Resistant
If you will be indulging in activities like swimming or
water sports, the sunscreen should be water resistant. Even if you will stay
away from the waters, you need sunscreen that will not break down when you
sweat. However, don’t expect that by being water-resistant it is waterproof. It
will not last forever while you are in the water. It only means that it is
effective for a certain amount of time. Experts say that you will need to
reapply at least after 40 minutes of being in the water.
OK For kids or Sensitive Skin
One family need not buy separate sunscreens for each member.
A good sunscreen should work its magic for both adults and children. However,
children who are much younger might require a specially formulated sunscreen
because their skin are more sensitive and may easily be irritated by the
ingredients products for adults. Likewise, adults with sensitive skin and those
who are prone to acne and allergies will benefit from sunscreens that have been
formulated for children.
There you have it. So a good sunscreen should be: safe for
children and those with sensitive skin, does not loose effectiveness while in
the water and it should have both UVA and UVB protection. And be sure to check
the expiration date.
That is not enough, though. A sunscreen will be highly
effective if you apply it generously on your skins, including the easy-to-miss areas
(example back of your legs, ears), at least 15-30 minutes before exposure. You
need sunscreen even when it is cloudy as the sun’s rays still penetrate through
the clouds.
Also remember that you need to reapply after some time and
even though we are lucky someone invented this sun-protecting magic, it is
always best to stay under the shade whenever possible.
